In the year 1975, Rev. Mammen Joseph from Kerala reached Bagdogra, West Bengal. He was a man with a passion and vision. He believed that serving humanity and uplifting the community is the best way to serve God and serve Nation. During that period, many lived in the darkness of ignorance and illiteracy. Ever since he reached this place, he was involved in many social activities in many villages of North Bengal. As he stepped into more remote villages of this part of our country, he felt a great need for providing education among the people because illiteracy was much prevalent among the villagers. This moved his heart and he initiated some measures in a humble manner to help the people around through social work and educating them.
There was a need to form a team to reach out to many people around this area and in the interior villages of this state, thus a team was formed in 1984, which was named as Peniel Gospel Team, however it was officially registered in 1987-1988. More activities were added in since then; however the vision of the organization remains the same: ‘A community will only develop if education is reached to all irrespective of age or social status or gender difference.’
